an Australian Adventure part ll
It is going to be different from last time, the thing is I don’t know how or in which direction or if ill like it or not. For the last couple of days I have been starting to feel again and I think I know its because I’m going to see him soon. On the 18th of December to be exact, at about 10am at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne, Victoria. It was the same exact place where I met him a year ago in Australia. Our greetings will be much different. It is scary and uneasy being in the complete dark about something that I made happen by buying a ticket. I cant wait for the waiting to be over.

BEYOND MUSIC 'WONDERLAND' FESTIVAL STRIVES TO BE ENVELOPING EXPERIENCE
By Veronica M Cruz
Each year thousands of music lovers flock to the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Some might be inspired to check out a new band or maybe to make new friends.
And then there are people such as 22-year-old University of Arizona student Marina Shiferman who decided to start her own mini-Coachella in the Old Pueblo.
"I didn't know what to expect, and it changed my life," Shiferman says of the music festival that she attended in the spring.
She began working on making her epiphany a reality, and the Wonderland Music, Art and Imagination Festival was born.
But forget about Alice's wonderland - this one is entirely Shiferman's. The communications major, who will graduate in May, wrote her own business plan for her company, Wonderland Entertainment, handles the marketing and promotion, and handpicked the talent for the festival.
"I just listened to music all morning and night and afternoon, and I picked which ones I liked," Shiferman says. "It's basically my iPod out there."
The festival's lineup includes a variety of local musicians, from the country-folk guitar of Stefan George to the energetic reggae and funk tunes of 8 Minutes to Burn and Skitn. A San Diego Latin funk group, B-Side Players, will bring its blend of cumbia, hip-hop and Caribbean-infused jazz.
The Portland, Ore.-based March Fourth Marching Band, described as "Duke Ellington meets Sgt. Pepper" on its website, will close the night with its festive big-brass-band sound and drum corps, complete with parade-like antics including flag twirlers and acrobatics. Also on the bill are DJ Squints, Greyhound Soul, Jimmy Carr, Seashell Radio, Brothers Gow and Road Runners.
Though the festival is mainly about the music, Shiferman wanted to create a whole experience for attendees.
"I'm creating an environment that you only get to experience when you're dreaming and in your imagination," Shiferman says.
So she brought on board the pyro-performers of Flam Chen, who will set up a display of magical mermaids and a few other surprises. Local artists including Moises Orozco and Kyle Greenberg will show off their whimsical sculptures and canvases throughout the wonderland.
Shiferman also has offered to donate 50 percent of the merchandise proceeds from the festival to the Ali Adelmann Foundation to help 20-year-old Adelmann, a former UA student who suffered severe brain trauma from a car accident last year and remains in a semi-conscious state.
Having had a brain tumor as a teenager, Shiferman says she was touched by Adelmann's story and has been keeping in touch with her mother.
"Anything will help her family out," she says.
Shiferman says she hopes the Wonderland Festival will be an escape from the day-to-day pressures and that people will have fun.
"To me, it's doing exactly what you want to do and seeing things that you wouldn't normally see, like people on stilts doing fire dances, saying what you want to say and dancing how you want to dance," she says.
THANK YOU
I am going to do my very best to explain the whole thing to you and to answer some of your questions.
This journey began with an experience I had in April. I had never been to a music festival and I could not have imagined the effect the environment would have on me. I went to Coachella valley music and art festival. I did not know what to expect going there, my friend invited me a week before. Right when we hit traffic in the California valley did I realize that I was about to enter a world from which I will never be the same again.
It was amazing. The sense of love and community is over whelming. The most amazing thing is that I always feel like an outsider, people always tell me I am weird for wanting a world of people who love the same things I do and who want to live with freedom of expression and imagination, not rules and regulations only to live a boring life and at Coachella i did not feel like a weird weirdo, i felt surrounded by weirdos and i was so comfortable. After I came back it took me 5 days to adjust to “normal” life or “reality.” I was right, after that experience of eternal freedom, love, music, dance parties, endless friends, safety my mind never thought the same.
I want to create a type of world like I experienced. I want to do it my way and provide happiness and a wonderland experience to people like I had. I knew I wanted to get into the entertainment business but I didn’t know that I would start my own company, wonderland entertainment, and I would start a festival. It was an epiphany one day, of course I am going to start a music art and imagination festival because that is the place I want to be.
A huge help, mentor, and hand holder was Anthony Trugman. He works at The Hut as the stage manager and music booker. I met him back in September and we got to talking about music and music festivals and once I brought him the business plan and the idea that I was doing it and this is what I wanted we got started.
The way I picked the artists was just listening to music day and night, which isn’t a burden because I love love love doing that anyway and discovering new artists right under my nose is so exciting. Anthony did give me a few suggestions along the way and I booked some bands that I saw at a show and loved like March Fourth and the B-side players. I discovered 8 minutes to burn from digging through myspaces and I love every single band that played. I found the road runners while I was out to dinner one night and they astounded me, especially because the boy robby lee is only 13 and has the voice of louis Armstrong.
I picked flam chen because they are amazing. I worked with the Sculpture Resource Center for a painting by Joshua woodhall and moises orozco built the wonderland arch way. Moises lives with a few members of parasol and he told them about his latest project and leah from the paracol contacted me. Now we are all friends and I ove it. I am so glad that they did because now I love them and they brought a special something to the event. I used to be a ballerina, a serious one and I love to perform and I have a respect for performers.
I want my festivals to be special, to have elements of imagination and creativity. Not just music not just art but dancing and fire and sculptures and jam sessions and writing and photography and skits, creativity and imagination festivals that leave lasting memories is what I want.
-It took me about 3 months to plan. I like working fast.
-The hut was not my first choice. I wanted to do it at a park to really have a festival vibe but for my first festival Anthony suggested the hut would be a great place to start.
-I sub as a bartender at the hut sometimes and that is how I got all those contacts, plus Anthony helped a lot.
-the mermaids are not part of flam chen, a girl by the came of Lauren malanga.
List of performers are all on my website. Enterthewonderland.com

enter THE WONDERLAND
I, Marina Shiferman, started Wonderland Entertainment to create and produce art, music, and imagination festivals for the joy of people, the happiness of the world, and to make imagination flow.
It all started when I went to Coachella music and art festival 2010. It was my first time at something like that and it changed my life. It brought me close to individuals from all over and in turn closer to myself. I want to provide what Coachella gave me to people. Everyone deserves to enter The Wonderland and Wonderland Entertainment seeks to provide it.

the times they are a changin'
We are in the midst of a musical revolution. Our generation is experiencing and creating things that were not around a year ago. The sixties experienced their music revolution with the Woodstock generation and Jimi, The Beatles, Dylan, the Stones. Our generation is raving to Pretty Lights, Bassnectar, and Dubstep. Never before has this type of music been around and we are the first to soak it up.

Its the magical mystery kind
Music is so ffeaifd;n g great. I think I know why I like it so much. Because you get to know people, who they are and some times you can relate to what they are saying like you wrote it your self like 40 day dream by Ed Sharpe and sometimes you cant but its always got emotion. Real emotion. Real fun and joy and happiness and well as the shitty parts that go along with those. Music is great.

take me to that place
I went to a strip club for the first time in my life yesterday. It was in San Francisco in North Beach. The hustler clubs down there are sketchy in a way, cheesy with their flashing lights and creepy men in suits out front. We had nothing else to do, so we decided to see naked chicks.
I was so excited. Iv been wanting to go to a strip club for ages now. Girls are sexy, no denying that, and I was with my Australian. The next day his words were
“I knew that you would like it, I just didn’t know you would love it that much.”
Ya, I had a great time. The girls were pretty hot at some places, pretty rank at others. 20 dollars got us admission into 4 clubs, 2 good and 2 bad. I got a lap dance, frankly I could do better. I saw the most gorgeous girl at one of them, she asked me if I wanted a private lap dance and I did very much but I had no more money. Money goes fast when your around naked girls.
2 flasks of jack and a 2 30 am visit to Sparky’s diner and me, Fred, and our 2 friends went to our hotel rooms. Fred and I stayed up quite a bit later. Fun night.

3rd and counting

Outside Lands was my 3rd festival since April; it was my 3rd music festival ever. I immensely enjoyed my time.
2 days and 5 stages in Golden Gate Park in San Fran where all the free thinkers and clouded thinkers roam.
Music
Art
Food
Wine
Festival.
We were surrounded by tall trees and walking, dancing, sitting in green grassy fields. The sun was shining, which is unusual for San Francisco even in August when the rest of the country is in the middle of a heat wave. It was warm and the day was bright and everybody had the loving feeling.
The first day was not as big as the second day, in the amount of people there. No lines, just awesome people. I went with Fred and three of our guy friends from San Diego, it was so much fun, I felt like I had four guys looking after me and just having a good time. We went straight for the food tents. About 30 local restaurants had booths at Outside Lands and they were outstandingly delicious. Fred got a Philly cheese steak with really good seasoned meat and lots of it. I got garlic mashed potatoes and barbequed chicken with some tangy Asian sauce. The first act we saw was PRETTY LIGHTS!
We are in the middle of a music revolution. Like in the late 60’s with Jimi and the Woodstock generation. Techno is taken to a different place, where electro is combined with soft hip-hop beats that hit you hard and oh so good. Dub step is a new type of music. Pretty Lights is a man that makes new sounds, sounds never sounded so good.
Then we went to the other stage to see Gogol Bordello. If you haven’t heard of them I wouldn’t be surprised. They play gypsy, Russian, folk, good big ol Russian wedding music. They are so energetic on stage and festive. The lead singer is a skinny mid aged guy with long black hair and a clearly European face. He referred to his Fiddle/electrical violinists as “the king of Russian rock and roll.” Look up “Start wearing purple” by Gogol Bordello on YouTube, when they played that song my mind went into complete festival mode.
Then we went to Bassnectar. He did awesome except for a sound problem. After that we went to the Heineken tent. We all got beers then followed the tent hallway to a rave, basically. Rave music and lights being projected off the ceiling and everything was dark blue. It was a fun time. Then we went to a small stage to hear Beats Antique. They are super chill beats with a twist. I was on my feet the whole time. Then it got very cold and I turned into a pussy. After it got dark we went to watch the Strokes. Not only did they play very well they had awesome red light bulbs on their set. It was spectacular to see especially at night, the contrast between the dark from the outside and the lights from the stage.
The first day was great. It was energetic and exciting. I had a blast with Fred and the boys and met some great people. The people set the festival environment. Of course everyone is awesome at a music festival.
You don’t camp at this festival. The park closes at 10 every day so the festival was done around 9 30. I went to stay with my old roommate from ballet school on Washington st. while Fred and the boys went to the Pretty Lights after show at the Independent. They said it was beyond words, he did a mash up of Biggies Juicy and Empire State of Mind for the chorus. They were dead the next day. My body shut down when I came home and even though I slept on the floor it was such a good sleep.
The next day had way more people than the first day. Even though it was more crowded I didn’t feel uncomfortable or cramped. That is an important aspect of music festivals for me, the comfort of not being over populated and too big and having it in a nice comfortable grassy place. Again, the second day was shiny and great. The Devil Makes Three blew me away as well as all my friends and the crowd. There are three musicians that make up this high energy, southern folksy band. They all play in unison, each as fast as the next so they are more in sync. It was real knee slapping, skipping type of fun music, true happy festival tunes. “Black Irish” is an outstanding jam.
What sold me on the music aspect of the festival was that Al Greene was performing. After The Devil Makes Three, Fred and I got some food and went straight to get a good spot for Al Greene. We got up close to the stage, we went about an hour early. We got to our spot in the midst of people and sat down. Met some friends and jointed it up. Al Greene was awesome, quite possibly one of the best, funkiest performances that moved me.. He broke out into random dances and really felt the music. He wore a black suit and at one point took of his jacket and threw it on the floor and went into a groove.
Then we went to Slightly Stoopid. As always, they were great and music as chill and irie as ever. Big surprise when Del Tha Funky Homosapien came on. It raised my blood and my voice.
Aterciopelados is a band from Colombia. Nice beats and good to jam to.
Nas and Damien Marley put on a good ass performance. Nas did this freestyle that kept going and going and he was flowing and owning that stage. “Welcome to Jamrock was a huge hit and set everyone off, as usual.
The last thing we saw was Kings of Leon. Again it was nighttime and they had superb lights on their stage. They sang a cover of the
Pixies “where is my mind?” and “sex on fire.”
It was a great festival. Just enough people, good food, great environment. Cool looking statues and a cool Rasta man made out of balloons. I enjoyed myself. More festivals give me more ideas of what I want in my own music festival, coming soon one day.

Outside lands, 2 days, golden gate park, music festival, august 14 and 15. This Saturday and Sunday. We are making out was to San Fran by Friday.
After another couple of weeks, or a few days and another few stops we got to Santa Barbara. So we got to Santa Barbara the last night of fiesta. Apparently it’s a huge party on State Street with confetti and bands and tons of people and sold out motels everywhere. Thankfully a friend of mine from high school years lives in Santa Barbara so we met him up and went out with him and his friends then slept on his floor. This time Fred and I came prepared with blankets and a pad and pillows because we might go camping. It was a fun night, lots of stuff going on.
The next day we checked into a motel on State Street. It was great, a bed, mirrors, a shower, and State Street. Fred had never seen the original Alice in Wonderland. We downloaded it and watched it in the morning, after a J.
The next day we were off to San Louis Obispo where we are now and where I am writing this little blurb. Its great here, less people that in southern California and I love that. The sky is clearer and the weather is warmer and the sky is sunnier and blue. One of my best friends from high school lives here and we hung out with her, Liz.
Fern Gully is Avatar. Avatar is Fern Gully. Scene for scene.
We went to Avilla beach. It was nice, very cute little town above it, freezing water. Then Liz, Fred, and I found this trail. The trail led to stairs. By the way the trail was in a bunch of cliffs with the ocean at the bottom and mansions on top, it was Shell Beach. So back to the stairs, steep stairs clearly just chizzled out. Then there were ropes installed in the cliffs for you to hold onto and climb down the cliff. It was sort of like rock climbing the opposite way and with ropes to hold onto. I did scratch my ass a few times but we finally got dow, down to a nude beach balled pirates cove. Only a few people, some couples, such nice people. One guy gave me a peace sign with his fingers when we walked by and when we left he said ‘goodbye’ when we left, like it was his personal beach. He was bald, tan, good aged, and big dicked, not what you would expect. There was a topless woman
playing ball with her dog, nice boobs.
I love finding awesome spots by the beach. Secluded hide aways filled with goodies. In San Diego in sunset cliffs we found a secret stoner playground. Off the made up trail that we made was an irie dream. It had rope swings that you could run off the side of the dirt to get a running start, two of them. And up to the right was a bench with a perfect view of the ocean and carvings into the tree behind it.
I don’t know what today is going to bring or tomorrow. I just can’t wait to Outside Lands.
back at it
It was touch and go there for a while, everything was, at least for me. a week with my family in long beach away from my Australian was pretty boring. What got me through was knowing that I only had to be there a week. When I would sit in a chair and read or watch t.v all night I would cry to myself that I’m wasting my gorgeous 22 years but just then I would say its only temporary. I had a wonderful time with my family, but it was temporary. Then I met Fred in San Diego. We slept on our friends roof right on the bay and saw the Sea World fire works at night, for free.
We took a trip in Tucson, not recommended in the summer months.
Back to San Diego.
For my Australians birthday we went to Kate Sessions park in San Diego. It overlooks the bay and the ocean and the whole of the city. It’s such an awesome, awe-striking view. There was also a live band in the park that day and so many people. It was like a music festival with how many people there were. Instead of high people dressed as fairies there were families with babies and wine, volleyball courts with big muscly guys on them and their chicks. We barbequed and enjoyed the bomb band. They were jammin. As for us, Blunt and a long, long night. We got to sit in on a jam session with some guys in a house and got to bed on our friends floor at about 5 or 6am.

theres the dopeness and theres the wackness. which one do you see?
"Certain people you just can't trust, you know?
Never trust anyone who doesn't smoke pot or listen to Dylan.
Never trust anyone who doesn't like the beach"
Embrace everything that comes your way, even if its shit, especially if its shit.

I brought Chivalry to an Australian, and to myself
He is a wonderful boyfriend. But he was never taught to open the doors for the ladies. So it’s not his fault that he doesn’t, he said he just never thought about it. I had to tell him that I need that. In a nice way of course.
I thought he was going to open the door for me one night but he actually forgot which side of the car to enter because in Australia you drive on the other side of the car and the road. So when we got in the car I said
“aw, I thought you were opening the door for me. I would like that very much.”
That’s all it takes ladies, a simple reminder. And then another.
Then when we did the long 7 hour trip back to Long Beach from Santa Cruz I taught him what my parents taught me.
-Men always open the doors for their women. LADIES FIRST, duh.
I can not let that go.
I am special to him, that’s why I’m his girlfriend.
So, moral of the story, ladies speak up and don’t settle for anything less than what you want.
keep moving on
It was very sunny and like summer again when we drove in. we parked the car, said hi to matt, and went a exploring. Got some 24 oz Negro especials from the store and walked on the boardwalk and through town. The boardwalk is a carnival equips with rides and roller coasters, a stage, merry go rounds, an arcade, and stands along the boardwalk, so quite literally a carnival. The sand was so soft and warm and light. It was a perfect summers day with my love after 2 weeks of shitty weather.
We went to this restaurant on the boardwalk with matt, his friend Warren, who is Hawaiian and has black hair to his shoulders and was so awesome. Later on Jamie, his girlfriend who works in the city and fires people for UCSF medical school joined us. We had drinks there and quite the salsa for the chips. Warren ordered oysters and nobody at the table wanted any. They served him on small, weird looking one and so they brought him two more. He gave one to me, after my second attempt with those boogery things I won’t’ be coming back.
Then it got cold.
We went to a taquiria then got beers and went to Matt’s. One beer did me in then I was on the verge of falling asleep, probably did a few times. They were talking about the documentary the Cove and how its bullshit that eating dolphins is part of the Japanese culture. Jamie went to UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA also; she was admiring my cat card. It’s cool that people from my school are all over the US and I have a chance to meet them.
Fred and I took the cushions off the couch and made a bed on the floor. Every morning that I wake up next to him I’m so content and happy and think that this is what I have been waiting for. I have been waiting for someone to make me feel happier every day to be with him and someone to want to explore and have adventure after adventure with me. This morning he told me that I'm fascinating. He tells me he loves me. And I actually can freely say it back; nothing within me is holding the words back.
We drove back to Long Beach and watched Mallrats and went to bed. Now hes in San Diego with some friends while i catch up with my family and friends here for a week. Its my brothers birthday on Sunday, he will be 28. Im going to go to Venice beach and get him some awesome art and pictures to put in his new apartment. Then Fred and I will be off to Tucson, AZ.
I love it.

Chivalry is dead so I hear, so ok, I'll bring it back.
I was struggling with how to write this, if I should do it in first person because then everyone will know what is happening with me and I wont be mysterious anymore, or if I should do it and leave myself out but when I thought about how I would write it instead it just didn’t work out. I decided to write the truth because I have a question. Not exactly a question so much as when this happens I grunt to myself and I know why, now after many grunts and ‘what the fuck’ faces I decided to finally answer it on paper and get it out of my head.
While writing the title of this article I thought of one more thing. The definition of chivalry is the qualifications of a knight, including courtesy, gentlemen, and generosity, especially toward a woman you want to be yours.

The Green Tortoise

Fred told me about this hostel in San Francisco that he stayed at, he told me that it was one of the best, if not the best, hostels he had ever stayed at. It’s by north beach, by the Beat museum, and by the Garden of Eden and tons of XXX shops and clubs. Its located here, where it all began, where the hippies first made their marks. I thought we should stay for a night.
We checked into our room, 2 bunk beds and 4 beds. Fred and I were in the same room and in our room were 2 guys from Sydney. Tristan and Josh. Tristan was born in Australia then moved to New Jersey until he was 11 years old then moved back to Australia. His accent is not that deep. Josh had a stripped button down shirt, I think it was neatly ironed. Then we went down to the ballroom. It’s a large room with funky carpet with flowers and swirls and colors. A bunch of tables and booths like old school diner booths, a pool table, fooze ball table, a little risen stage with guitars, drums, bongos, stereos to hook up ipods. I have my ipod in right now listening to red hot chili peppers with my friend Chris playing a guitar next to me. I met him last night, he’s from Jersey and he just came from Portland. Fred and I met loads of people last night.
We all had a great time drinking beers and story telling. I had one of the funniest conversations of my life last night with my two Australian roommates and 2 Australian chicks. We were talking about head towels. You know you see some people with towels on their heads. I guess they don’t have a hat. Tristan had the idea of maybe openings up a head towel shop for those who need head towels. When we checked in the girl at the front desk told us that we can drink and smoke in the ballroom after 9pm. At 10pm Fred was rolling all of us a joint at a table in the middle of the ballroom. Some guy in crutches who had knee surgery and looked like a yeti with black hair and beard sold us an 8th, he was just sitting at a booth smoking a spliff. No big deal.
That’s how it should be.
Pieces of the world come together at a hostel.
Different parts of the world come together and share memories, evenings, stories, and each others lives.

peace. love. unity. respect. Electric Daisy Carnival
Carnival by definition.com standards is any merrymaking, revelry, or festival, as a program of sports or entertainment.
Carnival by my standards is the best, most fun filled, most loving place to be merry and be taken away into another world.
140,000 people showed up at this year’s Electric daisy carnival and they were all dressed by their imaginations. I went on Friday, but it went Friday and Saturday. 6 tents and 100 artists for 140,000 people to live in, explore, and love. It was held at Exposition Park and the memorial coliseum in L.A.
It was my first time at a rave and I was told that EDC was the biggest and best rave in the world. That was hard for me to believe because it’s only a half hour drive from my hometown in Long Beach. I could not even predict a little bit what I was about to experience and see. I went with a group of my guy friends, one being my Australian love. We went shopping the day before for costumes, apparently the craziest outfit you could pick out would not even be slightly crazy compared to what others were wearing. We picked out a great little orange shirt that said ‘hoochie mama’ for my baby, Fred and an energetic 80’s spandex aerobic outfit for me. The next day we were on our way. As soon as we got off the freeway it was packed and you could hear the heavy beat of the music bumpin a mile away. That’s when my vision was pushed and my reality erased.
We waited an hour for the rest of our friends to get there. Then, we went inside and I don’t think we ever really left.
There were food stands, a guy on jumpy stilts dancing like no other in the air, sculptures that looked like they were made out of wire, a big ferries wheel, rides, stages with TV’s and light shows, tons of loving people dancing like nobody is watching. This was all before the sun went down. Then as it went down, we made our way into the coliseum.
The coliseum was packed. Imagine it, thousands of people in the stands so when you have a 360 view all you see is specs with lights and thousands of people in the center where the field would be dancing. Kaskade was so sick, I mean I did not stop dancing his whole entire set and neither did the whole of EDC. We were all one, we all felt each other, even the specs on the opposite side of the coliseum felt like they were beside me.
The show was just that, a spectacular show and feast for the soul and eyes and ears and body. Brazing fires and fire works and Kaskade written on the screen in unison with what he was playing. I was afraid to say it but that was a perfect night.
Everything was perfect.
Since it was my first rave I had nothing to compare it to. I heard many times from people that they had never seen anything like that. You must go, but only if you’re a loving person.
Peace. Love. Unity. Respect, among all.

pre bonnaroo
South Carolina is not like Arizona. It’s humid, not dry. They have bingo Tuesday nights at a bar, we have Tuesday booze day at ours. They are dry in stock; we have an abundance of green. The backyards of houses are forests, not rocks with cactus.
Me, my roommate Dana, and our friend Katie went on the adventure of a lifetime. We flew to South Carolina to stay with Dana’s cousin, Ashley, who just graduated from Clemson University. We partied with her a night in South Carolina before driving to Manchester, Tennessee. Katie and I weren’t interested in bingo, we were interested in Karaoke, “the way you make me feel” by MJ, obviously. We had a row of boys dancing in front of us; it was like we started a movement just by lip singing.
